How to Install Windows XP on an eeePC
10/28/2010 00:00:00

You can install Windows XP on an EEE PC from Asus in almost the same way that you would install it on an ordinary computer. There are just a few additional steps. The biggest issue people will have is that the original EEE PCs had very small hard drives that will not hold much more than Windows XP itself. You can partially remedy this problem by adding an SD card for additional storage.

Difficulty: Moderately EasyInstructions1

Attach your USB CD ROM drive to the computer and, if needed, plug it in. Open the drive and insert the Windows XP disc.

2

Turn on the EEE PC. Press the "F2" button the moment the computer begins to boot. Keep pressing it until the computer enters BIOS. Use the arrow keys to move to the "Advanced" tab. Select "OS Installation" from the "Advanced" menu. Change this to "Start." Use the arrow keys to select the "Boot" tab. Select the external CD ROM drive as the first "boot device." Press "F10" and reboot your computer.

3

Press any key when the message "Press any key to boot from CD..." displays. Press "Enter" to "install Windows XP now. Press the "F8" button to accept the license agreement. Press "Enter" again. You will be asked to specify the partition to which you would like to install Windows XP. Select your internal hard drive. Select "format" and allow Windows Setup to format the drive.

4

Choose your region and language when prompted. Click "Next." You will be asked for your name and the name of your company. Enter them and click "Next." You will be prompted to enter your product key. This is a string of numbers and letters on the Certificate of Authenticity. Enter it and click "Next." Enter an administrator password and click "Next." Enter the time and date and click "Next." Click "Next" at the "Network settings" screen. Click "Next" again for the "Workgroup" screen. Click "Next" at the "Welcome" screen. Select "Help Protect my PC..." and click "Next." Select whether you will be using a network or LAN to connect to the Internet. Click "Next." If your computer is connected to the Internet already through the Ethernet port on the back of it, select "Activate Windows Now." If it is not, do not activate now. Instead, wait until after step 5. Add any users you want on your computer and click "Next." Click "Finished."

5

Click the "Start" button and select "Shut Down." Select "Reboot." Press the "F2" button when the computer is rebooting to enter BIOS again. Use the arrow keys to select "Advanced." Select "OS Installation." Change this to "Finished." Remove the Windows XP disc from your CD ROM drive, but leave the drive plugged in. Press "F10" and reboot the computer. Insert the EEE PC Windows XP drivers disc when Windows finishes loading. Windows should start it up automatically. Select "Install All." If you did not activate Windows in step 4, do so after you install these drivers and connect to the Internet.

Tips & WarningsYou can also use a USB flash drive as an external hard drive if you would like to maintain maximum portability but do not want to be limited only to SD cards. This will be more portable than the standard external hard drive, while giving you additional storage options.Be sure to save any important documents before installing Windows XP. Anything previously saved on your EEE PC will be erased when you perform this installation.
